SCYLAX CARYANDENSIS

Suidas: Σκύλαξ Καρυανδεύς (πόλις ἐστὶ τῆς Καρίας πλησίον Ἁλικαρνασσοῦ τὰ Καρύανδα), μαθηματικὸς καὶ μουσικός. Περίπλουν τῶν ἐκτὸς (τῶν ἐντὸς leg. Videtur; τῶν ἐκτὸς καὶ ἐντὸς voluit Voss.) τῶν Ἡρακλέους στηλῶν, Τὰ κατὰ τὸν Ἡρακλείδην τὸν Μυλασῶν βασιλέα· Γῆς περίοδον· Ἀντιγραφὴν πρὸς τὴν Πολυβίου ἱστορίαν. De scriptis historicis aliunde non constat. De geographicis non est cur h. l. dicamus. Ceterum offendit Peripli et Periodi mentionem interposite opere historico male divelli. Arguit hoc titulos e compluribus anctoribus corrasos esse. Qua in re saepius Suidae accidit ut diversas unius ejusdemque operis inseriptiones tamquam operum diversorum titulos ponat. Fortasse igitur nostro quoque loco Periplus non distinguendus a Periodo. Similiter τὰ κατὰ τὸν Ἡρακλείδην κτλ. argumentum indicare possint τῆς ἀντιγραφῆς. Quamquam in nostris Polybianis Heraclidae hujus nulla fit mentio. Pertinere regulus videtur ad illa tempora, quibus senatus Caribus et Lyciis, quos post confectum bellum Antiochicum Rhodiis attribuerat, liberis suique juris esse concessit. Mylasenses vero jam ante hoc senatusconsultum a Rhodiis desciverant (Polyb. XXX, 5, 12). — Nihil adeo refragari, quominus Periplus noster Scylacis Polybii demum aetate vel etiam postea ex auctoribus sat antiquis concinnatus sit, pluribus docet Letronnius in Fragments despoëmes gèogr. De Scymnos de Chios, etrc., p. 246 (varias aliorum sententias v. ap. Clausen ad Scyl. Peripl. p. 273); nihilominus inhaeret dubitatio num recte opus hoc, quale nos jam habemus ἀμουσότατον, referatur ad Scylacem musicum et mathematicum. Eundem vero vel aequalem ejus commemorat Cicero Divin. II, 42: Scylax Halicarinasseus, familiaris Panoetii, excellens in astrologia, idemque in regenda sua civitate princeps, totum hoc Chaldaicum praedicendi genus repudiavit.
